The 7th SAIC Design Challenge is supported in full by MG Motor UK and the Advanced Design Studio London (Advanced London)

Three accomplished young designers, mentored by SAIC Design Advanced London, have secured all three podium spots in the European category of the 2019 SAIC Design Challenge. The creatives demonstrated a highly original interpretation of the future of the hyper-connected mobility theme against stiff competition at the design competition finals in China.

The challenge, which received more than 500 entries from nearly 100 universities around the world, resulted in star designer and Coventry University student Ken Gan taking the top spot of the European category, with fellow classmates Kaiwen Fan and Ben Thompson placing second and third respectively.

Supported in full by MG Motor UK and SAIC Design Advanced London (Advanced London), the seventh SAIC Design Challenge competition is run by the brand’s parent company, SAIC Motor. Entrants were tasked with creating concepts based on the theme of ‘Intelligent Frontier 2030’ and creating the MG of the future. Using their imagination to embrace growing technologies such as 5G and autonomous driving solutions, the applications were intended to suit the needs of hyper-connected customers in 2030 and beyond.

As part of the competition process, the finalists worked side-by-side with SAIC’s experienced automotive designers, honing their proposals ahead of their transformation into scale models at the Design Challenge finals. The unique and daring designs were evaluated by a panel of expert judges from industry, education and media, utilising years of automotive experience to select the creations that best encapsulated the ‘Intelligent Frontier 2030’ brief.

Ken Gan, European winner of the SAIC Design Challenge 2019, said: “Taking part in the Challenge has been an amazing opportunity to learn from MG’s advanced design team, who allowed us to truly express our vision for MG in an ever-connected future. I am thrilled to have been named the European champion with my 2030 design and thank everyone who has helped me reach this far.”

The winners of each category were announced at the Design Challenge awards ceremony, held at the SAIC Design Centre in Shanghai. Ken, Kaiwen and Ben, along with the top three winners in each category, will receive an all-expenses paid place on the SAIC Global Design Culture Exchange Tour to further expand their knowledge and experience.

Carl Gotham, Advanced Design Director for SAIC Design Advanced London, said: “The quality and talent exhibited in this year’s submission have been phenomenal and it was fantastic to see so many passionate up and coming designers present their vision for the future of the MG brand. MG is a constantly evolving brand as it embarks on its long-term growth strategy and we offer our huge congratulations to Ken, Kaiwen and Ben for truly embodying the brief and reflecting the flair and style of MG in their futuristic designs.”

SAIC’s London-based Advanced Design Studio is instrumental in the development of the latest arrival to the UK market, the All-New MG HS. Arriving in showrooms this month, All-New MG HS is the marque’s flagship SUV, offering affordable luxury across the range. Available from £17,995 OTR, an intelligent and sporting design offers buyers affordable luxury without comprising on quality.
